This Winter Break our family was so blessed to take an amazing trip to visit family in Europe. We visited with my brother-in-law and his family, enjoyed museums, and soaked up the culture in several different cities. I felt so fortunate to be able to enjoy that vacation with my children, and see and hear their reactions to different locations.
We also learned some valuable lessons on this trip…
First, my sister-in-law taught me to plan some out-of-the-ordinary adventures. When we went to the Colosseum I was happy to go on a tour, but was amazed by the “behind the scenes and in the dungeon” tour she had arranged. Ashlyn and Ryan loved it!
Second, I forced myself to stand back and let my children make discoveries on their own. The teacher in me was eager to point out every plaque in every gallery, but it was wonderful to give them the opportunity to explore.
Finally, I learned to take pictures of everything. I took pictures of food, alleyways I thought were interesting, my children sleeping on trains—everything! Historically I had been shy about taking out my camera, but I didn’t want to forget anything this time. It is so much fun to go back through the pictures with my family and revisit our trip.
I hope this holiday season gave you the opportunity to share time and adventures with your children, and that all of your vacations—big or small, bring you closer together as a family.
Happy Holidays, from all of us at Compass Star Montessori
